LEO AWARDS: Night Two With Host Beverley Elliott

Beverley Elliott, best-known as Granny on Once Upon a Time, is a force of nature. She dominated Night Two of the Leo Awards or “hump celebration” night, as she called it. The woman tells jokes, has anecdotes about famous actors she’s worked with like Henry Winkler and came armed with a Top Ten List of 10 worst things to find on a craft table — wieners in water soup! But nothing I write can convey the power of her singing. Beverley Elliot can belt it out. Did people in Robson Square hear her? I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Her song “I’m Mad at Myself” stayed in my head overnight Saturday through Sunday to be replaced by her Gala number, “I’m an Actor for Hire”.  Look for her autobiographical one-woman show this September at the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Music, Comedy or Variety:

The Leo in this category couldn’t have gone to a nicer bunch than the Package Deal family. Creator Andrew Orenstein (from Malcolm in the Middle) accepted the Leo for the sitcom’s first season on CITY, partly filmed in front of a live studio audience in Burnaby. They just wrapped season two of thirteen episodes.

Jill Morrison of Package Deal was nominated for her performance as Nikki.

But the Leo went to Call Me Fitz’s Donovan Stinson, who also took home a Leo for his performance in animated series Mighty Mighty Monsters in New Fears Eve. which won the Leo for animated series. Whew.

Youth

Michael Eklund (known for his scary psycho characters) presented this category with Leos going to Spooksville for Best Youth series, as well as Best Performance by Mackenzie Gray.

Mackenzie Gray told the crowd it was his first Leo in sixteen years of nominations. Michael Eklund hugged his screen father on stage.

For Spooksville producers, winning the Leo proved bittersweet because they’d just learned their series had not been picked up by the Hub network. They dedicated their Leo to a colleague who’d died when filming of their first and perhaps only season started in Duncan, outside Victoria

Mr. Young didn’t get a Leo for its final season but the leads reunited: Milo Shandel (centre) was nominated for best performance and Gig Morton (left) and Brendan Meyer (right) presented.

And its sitcom successor Some Assembly Required picked up a screenwriting Leo.

Colin Cunningham got a Leo for best performance in Fools for Hire, whose producers thanked Vancouver actors “for coming out and playing with us.” Johannah Newmarch won the Leo for Polaris.

Information/Lifestyle:

Leo for Best Information or Lifestyle series went to Playground, an energetic music project from ten friends. Aubrey Arnanson of Wedding Belles won the Leo for best information/lifestyle host. Here she is presenting a category with Motive’s Brendan Penny.
